Uses:
Cefixime is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. This drug is known as a cephalosporin class antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic only treats bacterial infections. It will not be effective against viral infections such as colds and flu. Using any antibiotic when it is not needed may cause it to no longer work for future infections.
HOW TO USE:
Take Cefixime by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. In children, this drug may also be taken twice daily (every 12 hours).
When taking the chewable tablets, make sure to chew them completely before swallowing. The prescribed dosage depends on your medical condition and how well you respond to the treatment. In children, the dosage is also determined by their weight. To maximize the effectiveness of this antibiotic, it's important to take it at consistent intervals throughout the day. To help you remember, try to take the medication at the same times each day. It's crucial to continue using Cefixime until you have finished the full prescribed amount, even if your symptoms improve before then. If you stop the medication too soon, it could allow bacteria to persist and lead to a recurrence of the infection.
Inform your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse. Potential side effects include stomach discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, gas, headache, or dizziness. If any of these side effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Keep in mind that your doctor has prescribed Cefixime because they have determined that the benefits outweigh the risks of side effects. Most individuals using Cefixime do not experience serious side effects. Notify your doctor immediately if you experience rare but severe side effects such as intense stomach pain, ongoing nausea or vomiting, yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, unusual fatigue, or new signs of infection.
Symptoms to watch out for when taking Cefixime include a persistent sore throat, fever, easy bruising or bleeding, changes in kidney function, and mental or mood changes like confusion. In rare cases, Cefixime may lead to a severe intestinal condition caused by a specific bacteria, which can occur several weeks after stopping treatment. Avoid using anti-diarrhea or opioid medications if you experience persistent diarrhea, stomach pain, or notice blood or mucus in your stool, as they may worsen these symptoms. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop any of these signs.
When Cefixime is used for an extended period of time or repeatedly, it can lead to oral thrush or a new yeast infection in the mouth or vagina. If you observe white patches in your mouth, a shift in vaginal discharge, or other unfamiliar symptoms, consult your doctor. While severe allergic reactions to Cefixime are uncommon, seek immediate medical assistance if you experience any signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), intense dizziness, or difficulty breathing.
This list may not include all possible side effects. If you experience any other effects not mentioned here, consult your healthcare provider. In the United States, contact your physician for guidance on side effects. Adverse reactions can also be reported to the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 or online at www.fda.gov/medwatch. If you are in Canada, seek medical advice from your doctor regarding side effects and report them to Health Canada at 1-866-234-2345.
Important:
Refrain from sharing Cefixime with others. It is intended solely for your present condition. Do not use it for a different infection without your doctor's approval.
Missed dose:
In case you forget to take a dose, do so as soon as you recall. If it's close to the time for your next dose, just skip the missed one and take the next dose at the usual time. Avoid doubling the dose to make up for the missed one.
